Gates
of the Arctic National Park, in Alaska's central Brooks Mountain
Range, is the source of dozens of wild rivers that are enjoyed by
hikers and rafters each summer. Several Class I-II wild rivers, such
as the North Fork of the Koyukuk, the Alatna, Killik, John, and
Wild, offer a relaxing way to enjoy the Brooks wilderness. Many of
the river outfitters plan short day hikes into the scenic mountains
and side valleys.
The
Gates of the Arctic is a photographer's paradise. In addition to the
primitive mountain wilderness scenery, Dall sheep, moose, grizzly
bears, and wolves are frequently seen.
The
small village of Bettles, located just north of the Arctic Circle
near the John and Wild rivers’ confluence with the Koyukuk River,
is the outfitting and travel center for Central Brooks Range river
expeditions.
