The
emerald green upper Kenai River, which originates at Kenai Lake on
the Kenai Peninsula, offers one of Alaska's premier one-day river
trips for persons wanting easy whitewater. While Kenai's Class I-II+
whitewaters are not considered difficult, they do have some
exhilarating stretches that can be enjoyed by all ages. The Kenai
River, one of the state most productive for salmon and trout
fishing, has abundant wildlife including brown bears.
Kenai's
outfitters provide necessary rain gear and boots. Rafters may choose
between two trips, both which begin near Kenai Lake and flow through
the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge. The easier 11 mile (17.5 km)
float trip takes out at Jim Landing, whereas the longer 17 mile (27
km) trip continues to Skilak Lake downstream from Cooper Landing.
