Sixmile
Creek, located near the small village of Hope on the northern Kenai
Peninsula, is Alaska’s most frequently-run Class V guided
whitewater trip. Situated in steep Chugach National Forest canyons
rising over 500 feet above the river, its rain forest canopy is
nourished by cascading waterfalls and springs.
Sixmile
Creek is unquestionably a rafting trip for physically fit river
adventurers desiring the highest level of whitewater challenge.
Dropping at rates of over 50 feet per mile, Sixmile Creek roars
through three separate Chugach canyons, each increasing in
difficulty. Demanding Class IV and Class V whitewaters featuring
continuous steep drops, large hydraulics and powerful waves require
the coordinated efforts of physically fit paddlers. Numerous Class
IV-V rapids, including Staircase, Suckhole, Merry-Go-Round, and
Jaws, require close coordination and precise maneuvering of each
raft.
Anyone considering rafting Sixmile Creek should talk first
with the outfitters. One can expect to be questioned about their
previous rafting experience and their physical condition.
