The Middle Fork of the American River, in the mid-Sierra foothills, provides rafters a unique opportunity to experience a wilderness river in California's gold-rush country. Beaches, side creeks, and waterfalls alternating with exciting whitewater provide a variety of adventures in the picturesque canyons of the Auburn State Recreation Area. Along the calmer areas of the river, the chances of seeing deer, black bear, otters, and bald and golden eagles are excellent.
One of the first rapids encountered on the Middle Fork is Tunnel Chute, a fast, steep, narrow chute leading into a 30-yard granite tunnel that was blasted through the mountainside by early miners. Because of a potential for injury at some water levels, outfitters may not always run Tunnel Chute. Downstream, most Class II-III rapids such as Karma, Gumby, and Bus Wreck are more civilized. The exceptions are Ruck-A-Chucky and Murderer's Bar rapids, which are usually portaged.
