The South Fork of the American River, between Chili Bar and Folsom Lake, is California's most frequently rafted whitewater stretch. The South Fork American maintains its popularity because of its exciting whitewater, beautiful scenery, historical setting, and proximity to population centers. The river's put-ins are just a one and one-half hours from Sacramento and less than three hours from the San Francisco area. Many outfitters arrange charter-bus transportation from as far away as Los Angeles and San Diego.
The South Fork American offers a favorable blend of exciting whitewater and slow-moving flatwater and pools in the heart of California's Gold Country. More than fifty Class II-III rapids—such as Meat Grinder, Racehorse Bend, African Queen, Triple Threat, Ambush Island, Swimmers, Troublemaker, Satan's Cesspool, Lower Haystack, Bouncing Rock and Hospital Bar—test the skills of both beginning and intermediate rafters. In addition to providing raft trips for groups, children, families, and first-timers, many outfitters are accommodating the disabled and disadvantaged.
Rafters may choose between one-day trips on the upper Chili Bar Run or the lower Gorge Run and two-day camping trips that cover the entire 21-mile stretch from Chili Bar to Folsom Lake. On two-day trips outfitters such treats as gourmet meals, saunas, and volleyball games.
The South Fork American flows past the historic town of Coloma, where John Marshall discovered gold and started the famed California Gold Rush of 1849.
