Rafters wanting an even
greater challenge than the main Tuolumne should ask outfitters about
the rivers upper run from Cherry Creek to Meral's Pool. Known as the
Cherry Creek trip, unbelievable Class V+ rapids cascade and drop
almost continuously (at times up to 150 feet per mile), for nearly 9
miles (14 km) to the start of the main Tuolumne trip. Class IV-V+
rapids, such as Mushroom, Miracle Mile, Lewis's Leap, Flat Rock, and
Horseshoe Falls, will excite the most experienced rafter.
Self-bailing
rafts and more experienced professional outfitters make it possible
to descend the steep Cherry Creek tributary of the upper Tuolumne,
previously thought unrunnable. Persons interested in the one-day
Cherry Creek or upper Tuolumne raft trip should contact any of the
outfitters who offer the main Tuolumne trip.
