The Kaweah River, which drains the 12,000-foot high peaks of Sequoia National Park, is one of California’s steepest and most challenging whitewater runs. The incredibly beautiful river, which parallels California Route 198, is also very close to southern California’s metropolitan centers. It is just a three-and-one-half-hour drive from Los Angeles. The Kaweah offers an excellent opportunity to combine whitewater adventure with a trip to Sequoia or Kings Canyon national parks.
Outfitters promote the stretch of the Kaweah River, between the East and North forks, as an expert run for physically fit and adventurous rafters. During spring’s high waters, many of the Class IV-V+ rapids are scouted; some must be portaged.
