Just below northern
California's snowcapped Mount Shasta, and parallel to Interstate 5,
the upper Sacramento River features nearly fifty rapids during its
35 mile (56 km) descent from the Box Canyon Dam north of Dunsmuir to
the Shasta Reservoir. The favored whitewater run on the upper
Sacramento is the 14 mile (22 km) Class III-IV upper canyon trip
from Sims Flat to Dog Creek near Shasta Lake. These beautiful
canyons contain numerous rapids with pool drop rapids.
In most
years, the upper Sacramento can only be rafted in the spring. Early
reservations are recommended because the season is short and the
number of raft trips is limited.
