The North Fork Stanislaus
River is nestled within the breathtaking granite gorges of
Stanislaus National Forest and Calaveras Big Trees State Park in the
heart of the mother lode. Along the banks of the whitewater run,
giant sequoias tower above azaleas, dogwoods, and side-canyon
waterfalls.
The
North Fork Stanislaus is not a river for first-time rafters. Highly
technical Class III-IV+ pool-drop rapids—Beginner's Luck, Sierra
Gate, the Claw, Convulsion, Wallet Slot, and Emerald Falls—require
the best from each paddler and leave little time to enjoy the
river's most spectacular scenery.
Rafters
on the North Stanislaus should allow enough time to wander through
the North Grove of Calaveras Big Trees State Park and visit the
nearby Mercer Caverns and the historic gold-rush towns of Columbia
and Murphys.
