The upper Trinity
River’s Hayden Flat and Pigeon Point runs, which parallels
California Route 2 99 west of Weaverville, offer an excellent
introduction to whitewater rafting in the Salmon-Trinity Alps
Wilderness and the Trinity National Forest.
Single-day and
multiday trips of varying lengths enable families, senior citizens,
and the disabled to enjoy the mountain scenery and exciting, but not
too difficult, rapids.
Near the town of
Willow Creek, the lower Trinity River offers a gentle Class I-II
whitewater adventure for children and timid first-time rafters.
Drifting on mild currents, rafters pass sandy beaches, table rocks,
and inviting swimming holes in the narrow canyons of Fish Fang
Gorge.
Regular water
releases from the Lewiston Dam, in the Whiskeytown Shasta-Trinity
National Recreation Area, usually ensure ample water levels for
rafting throughout the summer.
