The Tuolumne, a National
Wild and Scenic River since 1984, has all of the features that any
river adventurer could want: remoteness, wildlife, and swift-flowing
and demanding whitewater. In addition, its banks and side canyons
are awash with the folklore of the Miwok Indians and early
California gold seekers.
For more
than two decades, the classic 18-mile (29 km) main Tuolumne has been
one of California's premier whitewater trips. Following a
breathtaking shuttle ride down the steep canyon to Meral's Pool near
Lumsden put-in, the river trip drops to 760 feet at Ward's Ferry
Bridge. This steep gradient, varying between 30 and 70 feet per
mile, creates 15 major Class IV-IV+ rapids. Tuolumne's noted rapids
include Sunderland's Chute, Hackamack's Hole, Ram's Head, The
Squeeze, Clavey Falls, Grey's Grindstone, and Hell's Kitchen. The
most exciting rapid is the renowned Clavey Falls, a breathtaking
Class IV+ plunge, one of the major drops on western rivers.
