The North Fork of the Yuba River features nearly 30 miles (48 km) of exciting free-flowing whitewater near the historic gold-rush town of Downieville. Its steep Class IV-V upper (Union Flat) section, which cascades for 10 miles (16 km) through numerous boulder gardens containing narrow chutes, concludes with the Class V Rosasso Ravine just above Goodyear's Bar, where the gradient exceeds 100 feet a mile.
North Yuba's 18-mile (29 km) lower (Goodyear's Bar) run offers rafters the choice between a one-day, 9-mile (14 km) run to Fiddle Creek or a two-day trip that ends in the placid waters of New Bullards Bar Reservoir. The highlight of the Goodyear's Bar run is the spectacular Class V Maytag Rapid, just upstream from Fiddle Creek. Rafting guests may choose to walk around Maytag.
Tahoe National Forest's issuance of commercial rafting permits to only three outfitters on the Yuba River assures an uncrowded experience for those who raft this beautiful Sierra river. California Route 49, which parallels much of the river, provides several vantage points from which to take photographs of the north Yuba's exciting rapids. Rafters should allow extra time to visit the charming and picturesque town of Downieville.
