While much of the Blue
River's flow, between its source near Breckenridge and its
confluence with the upper Colorado River near Kremmling, has been
quieted by the construction of Dillon Dam and the Green Mountain
Reservoir, rafting is possible from Silverthorne to the Green
Mountain Reservoir during a few weeks each spring.
The
most popular whitewater stretch is an eight-mile (13 km) run
paralleling U.S. Highway 9 from Silverthorne to Columbine Landing
about 8 miles upriver from the Green Mountain Reservoir. This run
features 6 miles (9.5 km) of rather easy Class I-II whitewater,
which can be used as practice for new paddlers for the final 2 miles
(3 km) of fairly continuous Class II-III waters.
Morning
or afternoon trips on the Blue are convenient to those driving from
Denver or the central-Colorado mountain resorts. Due to the short
season and unpredictability of water flows, it is advisable to check
with outfitters a day or two prior to scheduled trips.
