The most frequently
rafted section of the Colorado River is a 10-mile (16-km) stretch
paralleled by Interstate 70 near Glenwood Springs in north-central
Colorado. During normal summertime water levels, almost anyone older
than six may enjoy fairly easy half- and one-day trips through the
spectacular Class II+ Glenwood Canyon above Glenwood Springs. Also
available to rafters is the option of continuing of an even milder
river trip from Glenwood Springs towards New Castle.
While
rafting the middle Colorado is very popular with summer visitors to
Glenwood Springs. Usually, neither reservations nor previous rafting
experience is necessary. Several outfitters have sales offices in
the vicinity of the town's motels and the popular hot springs.
Glenwood Canyon offers a big-water bonus for teenagers and
adults. Just above the Grizzly Creek put-in, the Shoshone section of
the Colorado provides rafters with an extra 2 miles (3 km) of
action-packed whitewater. Six challenging Class III-IV
rapids—including the Superstitions, The Wall, Tombstone and
Maneater—become a dynamic preface to the much-easier waters of the
Glenwood Canyon trip that follows. During springtime high waters,
outfitters have a sixteen-year age limit on the Shoshone section.
