The upper stretches of the legendary Colorado River, west of its Rocky Mountain National Park source, feature some of Colorado's finest and most popular beginning-level whitewater trips for families, first-time rafters, and large groups. In the beautiful high forests and steep canyons of the Gore Range just a two- and one-half hour drive from Denver, the Upper Colorado is rafted and floated for nearly 58 miles (92 km) between Kremmling and Interstate 70 near Dotsero.
Upper Colorado outfitters offer a wide variety of relatively easy raft trips ranging in length from a half-day to three-days. The most popular are half- and one-day family trips on a 14-mile (22-km) Class I-II+ run from the Pumphouse in Lower Gore Canyon past Radium to State Bridge. Multiday trips with overnight camping continue downstream through scenic valleys and ranch lands for as much as 44 miles (70 km). Multiday trips have ample time for relaxing, swimming, hiking, and fishing.
