The Eagle River, a
free-flowing tributary of the upper Colorado, originates high in the
central Rockies’ Tennessee Pass, a few miles north of the historic
mining town of Leadville. For most of its 60-mile (96-km)
northwesterly journey to the Colorado at Dotsero, the Eagle
parallels U.S. Highway 24. Its diverse course through narrow
canyons, over steep drops, and Eagle Valley, features fine
whitewater, peerless alpine scenery, and assorted high-altitude
wildlife.
Two
excellent whitewater rafting trips are available during the short
late-spring and early-summer season. Beginning west of Minturn, the
Class III-IV+ upper Eagle offers an exciting half-day ride for
adventurous rafters. Immediately downriver, the more popular lower
Eagle provides a mellower yet still exciting Class II-III+
whitewater run suitable for families and first-time rafters.
Outfitters offer half-day and one-day trips on the lower section,
which ends just upriver from the town of Eagle.
