The Taylor River, which meets the East River at Almont to create the upper Gunnison River, has carved one of Colorado's most impressive alpine canyons. Large herds of elk and bighorn sheep that winter in the Almont Triangle Game Refuge are often seen from the river in the spring.
Water releases from the Taylor Park Reservoir generally permit sufficient water for rafting throughout the summer. The Class III-IV rapids of Taylor's forested upper section—The Slot, Sneaky Pete's, Generator Alley, The Squeeze, and Suckhole—start below Lottis, some 4-miles (6.5 km) below the dam. The narrow channel and regulated flow create an excellent whitewater run.
Downstream, the easier Class I-II lower Taylor between Harmels and Almont, is an ideal river adventure for families and first-time rafters. Outfitters offering half-day trips on the lower Taylor will accommodate rafters of any age.
