The Yampa River rafting trip in Dinosaur National Monument is one of only two multi-day trips that begin and end within a national park or monument in the lower 48 states. For 46 miles (74 km) from its put-in at Deerlodge Park to its confluence with the Green River near Echo Park, the free-flowing Yampa River carves its way through spectacular 2,000-foot deep white Weber canyons.
The Yampa is Colorado's last undammed major river. Its whitewater is best during May and June when its channel is swollen with the spring runoff from its upstream tributaries. During this time many Class III-IV rapids—such as Teepee, Big Joe, and the much-heralded Grand Canyon-size Warm Springs—are at their prime. More than sixty notable rapids that challenge and delight Yampa rafters.
Because of the premier beauty of the Dinosaur canyons, professional outfitters generally continue Yampa raft trips for 26 miles (42 km) onto the Green River and float an additional one to three days through Whirlpool Canyon and Split Mountain Gorge in the Utah portion of the national monument.
Rafters on the Yampa should allow an extra day either before or after their trip to visit the Dinosaur Quarry near Jensen at the southwest entrance to Dinosaur National Monument.
