The dam-controlled waters
of the Madawaska River, just east of Ontario's Algonquin Provincial
Park, provide an ideal opportunity for families with small children
to safely enjoy whitewater rafting. The two-hour trip, through a
picturesque wilderness forest environment between Bark Lake and Lake
Kamaniskeg, has relatively easy and friendly Class I-II
rapids—Staircase, Gravelpit, Cottage, and Claudia's
Roller—without steep drops.
Rafting
on the Madawaska River is dependent upon Monday through Thursday
water releases from the Bark Lake Dam by the Ontario Hydro
Authority. The surface water spilling over the dam generally
provides adequate warm-water supplies throughout the summer rafting
season.
