Spectacular wilderness scenery and large exciting rapids created by the Precambrian shield rock outcrops highlight Ontario’s most popular commercial whitewater stretch just 75 miles (120 km) west of Ottawa. Covering a 5-mile (8-km) stretch, the wild and isolated Roche Fendu (French for "split rock") region has over 175 islands, and many secluded inlets and beaches.
The Ottawa's main channel, east of Beachburg, is well known for its large waves, powerful hydraulics, and breathtaking chutes. Big McCoy, Coliseum, Lorne, and Butcher's Knife rapids provide drenching Class III-IV entertainment throughout the summer season.
In the springtime, when Ottawa's main channel is swollen by melting snow, outfitters run an alternative trip on the Class III-IV middle channel. Here paddlers thrill to the spectacular 15-foot drop at Garvin's Chute, navigate tight channels at Little Trickle rapids, and ride large waves at No Name rapids.
Because of its large watershed, the Ottawa has surprisingly warm water and maintains good flow the entire summer season.
