The popular Rouge River provides thrilling rafting opportunities in the western Laurentian Mountains midway between Montreal and Ottawa. During its southern descent through the beautiful North Woods wilderness to the Ottawa River, the Rouge passes through several breathtaking gorges featuring impressive geological formations and sandy beaches. Boulders and drops in these gorges produce large standing waves and outstanding Class III-IV rapids.
The Rouge, with nearly 16 miles (29 km) of ever-changing water flows and challenging rapids, is divided into two quite different trips. The upper, or Harrington Canyon, run—which includes Majestic Canyon, Confusion, Turbo, and Surprise rapids—provides the best springtime whitewater. Beginning in mid-June outfitters switch most rafting operations to the lower, or Seven Sisters Canyon section with its stimulating rapids: Steep Throat, le Seuil Elizabeth, Slice-n-Dice, Monster, Washing Machine, and the Mushroom.
The large drainage area of the Rouge generally permits warm, good water conditions throughout the summer season. Depending on water levels, outfitters offer rafters a single run through either one of the sections twice, or two-day combination excursions.
