Rio Antigua, which originates on the snow-covered slopes of Pico de Orizaba (18,700 feet), drains a tropical rain forest region of the Mexican state of Veracruz. The river passes through a wild and diverse setting—with a friendly village or two—of a land filled with the reminders of its pre-Columbian and Spanish colonial past. More than four centuries ago, Cortes launched his conquest of Mexico from a point near the Antigua’s mouth close to Veracruz on the Gulf of Mexico.
While the Rio Antigua’s swiftly flowing current is often interrupted by exciting Class III-Iv rapids such as Rock Garden, Straight Off Adolf, Rooster Tail, and Ski Jump, the overall pace of the trip is slow enough to allow guests sufficient time to explore the river’s surroundings. Rafters will enjoy sampling fresh seafood, tropical fruits, and souvenirs at local markets. At one riverside campsite, guests can also relax in a large hot spring.
