Rio Jatate, born in the highlands of Mexico’s frontier state of Chiapas, is a free-flowing adventure trip through some of the country’s last remaining rain-forest wilderness. Jatate’s rapids, which flow over travertine formations, are not for the fainthearted. Although most of Jatate’s rapids are Class III, there are several fairly difficult Class IV and V waterfalls, chutes, and slides that are run. There are also Class VI portages.
Rio Jatate is rafted at a leisurely pace, allowing plenty of time for scouting rapids and hiking to nearby waterfalls. Extra days are allowed for visiting the famed ruins of Palenque and Aqua Azul Park.
