The
calmer upper sections of the New River between Hinton and Thurmond,
also part of the New River Gorge National River, are well-suited to
families, senior citizens, the disabled, or anyone wanting a
friendly introduction to whitewater rafting. Children as young as
six will enjoy the beautiful scenery alternating with the easy Class
I-II+ rapids and slowly moving flatwater.
On
warm either of two popular 8-mile (13-km) rafting trips allow ample
time for swimming, a short hike to a waterfalls like Dowdy Creek, or
just simple relaxation. Two-day trips, normally 14-16 miles (22-26
km), with riverside overnight camping, are also available. In
addition to paddle and oar rafts, inflatable kayaks are available
for those wishing to paddle their own boat.
