The lower Dead River offers 15 miles (24 km) of almost continuous whitewater through some of Maine's most remote wilderness forest. Following the Grand Falls put-in, the Class III-IV rapids maintain intensity along the entire stretch and are highlighted by exciting Poplar Falls, with deep holes and large waves just before the Dead joins the Kennebec River at West Forks.
Rafting on the Dead is made possible by scheduled water releases from the Kennebec Water Power Company's Flagstaff Dam. High-water releases are normally on at least six weekends during May, June, September, and October, with one very high release during May. In the late-spring and summer seasons, low water releases are ideal for guided Class II-III+ inflatable kayak trips. Rafters interested in high-water spring trips should make reservations very early in the year.
