Each spring New York's
Moose River becomes a raging stretch of river reserved for
experienced and physically fit whitewater enthusiasts. Magnificent
geology featuring large boulders and wide ledges produce numerous
Class IV complex rapids; flipping rafts is common, so be ready to
swim. Class V Tannery and Mixmaster are two of the most difficult
rapids in the East.
Rafting
on the Moose River is not for everyone. In addition to being
adventurous and hardy, rafters must be willing to undertake a
certain degree of risk. Outfitters caution potential rafters that
the Moose River is difficult and previous rafting experience is
highly recommended. The Moose River is rafted only during April,
when the water is extremely cold. Wet suits are required, and extra
wool clothing is usually needed.
