The lower Flathead River
trip, which begins near Polson at the south end of Flathead Lake,
provides an exciting, yet relatively easy, half-day introduction to
whitewater rafting. With the exception of four Class III
rapids—The Ledge, Pinball, Eagle Wave, and Buffalo—its rapids
are Class I-II. The river is especially popular with families,
seniors, and first-time rafters. Paddle trips give everyone an
opportunity to improve navigation skills.
The
lower Flathead, being dam-controlled, is usually raftable throughout
the summer season. Morning and afternoon trips normally take about
three hours. Reservations are recommended, but same day raft trips
are usually possible.
The scenic lower Flathead trip, located on
the Flathead Indian Reservation, is home to many birds of prey and
waterfowl.
