The Indians named the river Lochsa, meaning "rough water," and today these same turbulent waters create one of Idaho’s best multiday recreational whitewater challenges. More than twenty-five major rapids—such as Grim Reaper, Lochsa Falls, Bloody Mary, Horsetail Falls, and Ten Pin Alley—are rated Class III-IV+. The Lochsa is considerably more difficult than the Salmon River; it should considered only by active paddlers in good physical shape.
The Lochsa, part of the Clearwater Wild and Scenic River system, parallels U.S. Highway 12 from just below Lolo Pass to Lowell, where its meets the Selway to form the Clearwater River. During years of average snow pack, outfitters normally run two‑ and three‑day trips between late May and early July.
Beginning in mid-summer and continuing through Labor Day, outfitters offer half day and one day scenic float trips on the lower Lochsa near Lowell. Families with children as young as three years old are welcome on these trips.
