The very popular main
Payette, created by the confluence of the North and South forks,
offers an excellent introduction to whitewater rafting for families
and inexperienced paddlers. This beautiful whitewater river is also
a favorite with large groups. Guide-escorted half- and one-day raft
trips start at the town of Banks. Nearly four miles (6 km) of easy
Class I-II rapids at the beginning of the trip give paddle rafters
ample time to practice their skills before Class III-rated Mike's
Hole. The main Payette's two other Class III rapids, Mixmaster and
AMF, are located just prior to the Beehive Bend take-out for
half-day trips.
On
morning and afternoon trips, outfitters allow time for swimming and
relaxing. For those wishing to scout the river prior to their trip,
Idaho Route 55 parallels the main Payette's entire whitewater run.
