The last 52 miles (83 km) the Salmon River, before its confluence with the Snake River, is known as the lower Salmon. While perhaps not as wild or remote as the Middle Fork or main Salmon, the lower Salmon contains exciting whitewater and beautiful canyon scenery. The flatter stretches of the lower Salmon are excellent for hiking, relaxing, swimming, and fishing.
Four canyons—Green, Cougar, Snowhole, and Blue—have the lower Salmon's best rapids. These include the Class III-rated Snowhole, Half and Half, China, Devil's Slide, Sluice Box, Checkerboard, and the Needle. During July and August many families and senior citizens enjoy the exciting whitewater and arid-canyon scenery.
Lower Salmon rafting trips also include an additional 20 miles (32 km), or more, of the Snake River below Hell's Canyon, along the Idaho-Oregon border. The take-out for the lower Salmon raft trip is Heller Bar on the Snake River in Washington.
