The Main Salmon, or legendary River of No Return, originates in the Sawtooth and Salmon River Mountains of central and eastern Idaho. No fewer than five national forests constitute its watershed as it collects the waters of many tributaries, including the Middle Fork, and cuts the second-deepest gorge in North America in its journey across central Idaho.
During its nearly 80-mile (128-km) trip through the remote granite canyons of central Idaho, the Main Salmon drops 1,000 feet, creating more than forty memorable rapids. Its most difficult and impressive rapids include Salmon Falls, Bailey, Split Rock, Big Mallard, Elk Horn, and Chittam.
Forested hills, sandy beaches, crystal-clear sidestreams, adventure trails, ranches, and abandoned homesteads add to the river experience. The main Salmon, like the Middle Fork, offers rafters a good chance to see big-game animals. Each spring and fall, deer, elk, bighorn sheep, mountain goats and bears are commonly seen during their migrations between winter and summer ranges.
Many families and seniors enjoy the Main Salmon each year. Reservations for the warmer July and August months are recommended.
