The Middle Fork of the Salmon, considered the crown jewel of the National Wild and Scenic Rivers system by the U.S. Forest Service, provides one of the world's premier multiday wilderness river experiences. Between Boundary Creek, north of Stanley in east-central Idaho, and its confluence with the main Salmon near Cache Bar, the Middle Fork flows through the heart of the 2.4-million-acre Frank Church-River of No Return Wilderness and traverses portions of the Challis, Payette, and Salmon national forests.
More than eighty exciting rapids are in the Middle Fork, including many Class III-IV rapids, such as Velvet Falls, Waterwheel, Pistol Creek, Tappan Falls, Haystack, Porcupine, Redside, Rubber, Hancock, and Jumpoff. The pristine river is graced with numerous excellent campsites; most are adjacent to crystal-clear streams and rapids. Rafting trips allow time both mornings and evenings to hike, visit, read, or relax. Although Middle Fork rafting begins in May, families, seniors, and first-time rafters are advised to schedule trips during the lower flows and warmer waters of July and August.
The Middle Fork trip begins in an alpine environment about a two-hour drive north of Sun Valley. Its elevation, nearly 6,000 feet at the put-in, accounts for the variety of wildlife. During spring and early summer trips, rafters commonly see deer, elk, bighorn sheep, mountain goats, and bears. Other wildlife sometimes seen are cougar, lynx, bobcats, coyotes, fox, porcupines, badgers, beavers, martens, mink, otters, muskrats, and skunks. Fishing for the Middle Fork’s salmon, steelhead, and cutthroat, rainbow and Dolly Varden trout is excellent.
