About a ninety-minute drive north of Sun Valley, an alpine stretch of the upper main Salmon is Idaho's most popular whitewater trips. Here the Salmon headwaters, although much smaller than the famed River of No Return section, provide summer visitors to Sun Valley/Stanley area resorts with an exciting, yet not too difficult, opportunity to experience the thrills of rafting.

Outfitters specialize in various types of river trips. These include paddle trips where each guest helps control the raft under the direction of a guide; oar-guided rafts for families with young children, senior citizens, and the disabled; and inflatable kayaks for the adventuresome with each guest following the guide through the rapids. Outfitters welcome anyone above the age of four to share this exciting Salmon River adventure.
Trips begin near Stanley, Idaho, in the Sawtooth National Recreation Area. The Salmon's rapids and currents are ideal for practicing newly learned paddling techniques. Many first-time rafters catch the whitewater fever and return year after year to enjoy the Salmon River's special allure.
