The Murtaugh section of
the Snake, which cuts through southern Idaho’s plateau country,
has some of the state’s biggest whitewater. Rafters who desire
more demanding whitewater should be delighted. Murtaugh’s waters
are big, exciting, and demand respect.
At
higher spring-water levels, Murtaugh has ten Class IV rapids,
including Basalt Falls, Troll, Mabeline, and Misty; Class V Let’s
Make a Deal; and Class VI Pair of Dice.
During the calm stretches between
Murtaugh’s powerful rapids, rafters can enjoy the beautiful basalt
canyon walls and picturesque waterfalls and often get glimpses of
many birds of prey.
