The famed explorers Lewis
and Clark, who saw only its gentle confluence with the Yellowstone
River, inappropriately named the Stillwater River. From its
headwaters, which form near Yellowstone National Park among
Montana's highest mountain peaks, to the Yellowstone near Columbus,
the Stillwater continues to gain volume and intensity.
Rafters
ride the highest volume section of the Stillwater River, where a
one-sided canyon creates a series of waves and whitewater rapids.
Rolling hills and canyons dominate on the left bank while typical
Montana farm and ranch lands occupy the right. Back upstream, the
snowcapped Absaroka-Beartooth Mountains are frequently in view.
From mid-May until August, rafters may
enjoy the Stillwater's exciting Class II-III rapids in paddle rafts,
oar rafts or inflatable kayaks.
