The Grande Ronde River, which winds through the wild conifer forest canyons of the Blue Mountains in northeastern Oregon to the Snake River in southeastern Washington, is a perfect multiday river trip for families. Its friendly Class I-II+ waters are easy and fun.
While the Grande Ronde's most popular raft or float excursion is normally the three-day, 44-mile (70 km) section between Minam and Troy in northeast Oregon, many prefer the five-day trip that continues an additional 45 miles (72 km) to Heller's Bar near the river's confluence with the Snake River. Half-day and one day trips are also available upon request. Raft trips are usually run only between April and July when temperatures and water levels are at their best.
The Grande Ronde's diverse environs are rich in history, wildlife, and natural beauty. Chief Joseph and the Nez Perce Indians wintered on these lower stretches because of the mild winters and abundant wildlife. Even today, rafters commonly see Rocky Mountain elk, bighorn sheep, bears, deer, ospreys and bald eagles in the river's spectacular gorges and forests.
