The McKenzie River, one of west-central Oregon's most beautiful rivers, is ideal for first-time river runners and families as well as experienced rafters wanting superb whitewater. The McKenzie is easily accessible along Oregon Route 126 for almost the entire 90-mile (144-km) course, which runs between Clear Lake in the western Cascades and its confluence with the Willamette River at Eugene.
Whitewater raft trips on both the upper and lower sections of the McKenzie are striking beautiful and exciting, yet not too difficult. Between Paradise Campground and Blue River, the more technical upper McKenzie is highlighted by fairly continuous Class II-III rapids—including Paradise Rock, Plunger, Old Pushy, Big Fish, The Slammer, and Phil's Rock Garden—that require a surprising amount of coordinated raft movements by paddlers.
Downriver, the lower Mackenzie provides many Class II rapids, such as Clover Point, upper and lower Eagle Rock, Bear Creek, Brown's Hole, plus the Class III Martin's. The rapids blend nicely with many additional miles of easy Class I-II waters, which allow rafter time to enjoy the superb scenery of the Willamette National Forest.
