Western Washington's
North Fork of the Nooksack River is the state's northernmost raft
trip. The source of the Nooksack's challenging whitewater is the
glacier slopes of the north Cascades, so its best whitewater occurs
in mid- to late summer, after most other Cascade Mountains rivers
are too low for rafting.
Outfitters
normally begin the 8-mile (13 km) North Fork Nooksack trip at the
Douglas Fir Camp about 2 miles (5 km) east of Glacier, a popular
lodging village for skiers at Mt. Baker. The Nooksack's seven or
eight Class III rapids are all located within the first 3 miles (5
km) of the run. Downstream, less intense Class II rapids and flat
stretches provide rafters the opportunity to enjoy numerous views of
the impressive snowcapped Mt. Baker and the scenic farmlands of
central Whatcom County.
