The North Umpqua River provides whitewater enthusiasts an excellent opportunity to challenge exciting Class II-III+ rapids in the heart of southern Oregon's Umpqua National Forest. Oregon Route 138 allows outfitters several options for either one day or multiday raft trips along the North Umpqua. The most popular one-day paddling excursion is a 16-mile (26-km) trip from Boulder Flat to Gravel Bin.
North Umpqua's often continuous waters have one Class IV and numerous technical Class III+ pool-drop rapids—including Pinball (IV), Bridged Rock, and Amazon Queen—that are fairly steep and exciting, and yet forgiving. Flat stretches between many of the rapids give ample time for relaxation and swimming. In addition to paddle-raft trips, inflatable kayak trips are very popular during the low-water summer months.
The North Umpqua is one of Oregon's most popular late-spring/early-summer whitewater rivers. Its easy access to Roseburg and Interstate 5, together with its excellent rapids easily accessible to out-of-state visitors, contribute to its high percentage of repeat customers.
