Just upstream from the Wild section of the Rogue River, the Hellgate Recreation Section of the Rogue offers an ideal introduction to whitewater rafting. With a guide-escorted trip, families, senior citizens, and inexperienced rafters can enjoy the impressive Hellgate Canyon between Hog Creek, some 15 miles (24 km) downstream from Grants Pass, and Grave Creek, the put-in for the Wild section.
Hellgate Canyon, with easy Class I-II rapids such as Dunn Riffle, Galice Chute, Rocky Riffle, Chair Riffle, Almeda, Argo, and Wooldridge, can be enjoyed by paddle or oar raft or by inflatable kayak. Either half- or one-day trips are excellent for those lacking either the time or money for the multiday Rogue trips. Vacationers can usually book these trips on short notice.
