It is little wonder that when Congress began protecting the nation's rivers under the Wild and Scenic Rivers Act in 1968, southern Oregon's pristine Rogue River became one of the first chosen. The Rogue includes not just first-class whitewater, but heavily forested canyons with abundant wildlife, wild flowers, and fascinating folklore.
The Rogue River originates near Crater Lake National Park, and along its 140-mile (224-km) course cuts through numerous coastal range canyons to the Pacific Coast at Gold Beach. Popular three- to five-day raft trips are run through Rogue's Wild Section in the Siskiyou Mountains between Grave Creek, 5 miles north of Galice and Foster Bar, north of Agness.
Rogue's Wild Section includes the famed Mule Creek Canyon (Class IV) and many excellent Class III-III+ rapids, such as Grave Creek, Tyee, Wildcat, Black Bar Falls, Slim Pickins, Coffee Pot, Blossom Bar, and Devil Stairs. Class V Rainie Falls, on the first day of the trip, must be portaged. Rogue's canyons are also home to deer, bears, otters, mink, osprey, bald eagles and dozens of other bird species. Along with the thrill of whitewater rapids, there is sufficient time for rafters to hike and explore abandoned gold mines, cabins, and Indian grounds.
In an effort to preserve the wilderness experience of the Rogue, the Bureau of Land Management allows only three or four outfitters per day to begin trips at Grave Creek. Customers may choose between oar and paddle rafts, and even inflatable kayaks when water levels are low. Additionally, one chooses between trips offering comfortable lodge accommodations or riverside tent camping.
