The exciting Skykomish, or "Sky," River is considered by most Washington outfitters to be the state's premier whitewater trip for thrill seekers. Starting below Sunset Falls in the shadow of the 6,000 foot Mount Index, the Skykomish is respected for its well-known Class V Boulder Drop Rapids with its Airplane Turn, the preferred route at most water levels. Numerous other technical Class III-IV rapids, such as Marbleshoot, Lunch Hole, and little and big Deja Vu, and thickly-forested Cascade Mountains setting add to this spectacular river experience. On clear days, rafters will enjoy superb views of the area’s big peaks: Mount Index, Baring, Persis, and Merchant. The Skykomish River is included in the Washington's Scenic Rivers System.
The Skykomish, located approximately 45 miles (72 km) east of Everett, is the nearest whitewater rafting opportunity to the heavily populated cities of Seattle, Tacoma, and Everett. Its flows immediately adjacent to U.S. Highway 2 and the Great Northern Railway tracks between the small towns of Index and Gold Bar.
