The Wenatchee River, lifeblood of its famous apple-growing region, is the Washington's most popular rafting trip. Roller coaster whitewater action, big waves and usually sunny spring weather can be enjoyed by novice and experienced rafters. Exciting Class II-III+ rapids like Boulder Bend, Rock 'n Roll, Gorilla Falls, Drunkard's Drop, and Snowblind, provide plenty of thrills as the Wenatchee winds its way between apple orchards and small towns adjacent to U.S. Highway 2.
The Wenatchee River trip is not all whitewater excitement. Quiet stretches of the river, interspersed between its fine rapids, allow of sufficient length to enjoy the varied scenery and even engage in water fights.
When springtime water levels lower and temperatures rise, usually in June and early July, the Wenatchee's outfitters welcome families. Children as young as eight may raft with parents during this reduced water period.
Visitors to the Wenatchee River should allow enough time either before or after their raft trip to sample some of the fine apple products from local roadside markets. A visit to the neo-Bavarian shops and restaurants in Leavenworth is also recommended.
