The White Salmon River, a National Wild and Scenic River in south-central Washington, has exciting whitewaters that match its well-deserved scenic designation. At the beginning of the trip rafts must be lowered by a cable system 135 feet down a vertical cliff to the river. Rafters hike to the river on a switchback trail.
White Salmon's several technical Class III rapids—Grasshopper, Shark's Fin, Corkscrew, Waterspout, and Stairstep Falls—are at the bottom of a narrow gorge with steep lava cliffs. Following the canyon's intense rapids, one may relax and enjoy the calmer waters and scenic pastoral surroundings before reaching the last major rapid and whitewater highlight, Husum Falls. Outfitters do not run this Class V falls.
The White Salmon, located on the dry eastern crest of Washington's southern Cascades, is fed by glacier melt and numerous springs as it flows from the slopes of 12,278-foot Mt. Adams to the Columbia River near the town of White Salmon. The White Salmon has long been a popular river stretch for canoe and kayak races, which are held as part of the Husum Days celebration each July.

Family Rafting on the White Salmon River
During July and August, when the White Salmon's waters are both lower and warmer, outfitters offer family raft trips that include all of the same rapids--including a walk around Husum Falls--as the early season. Children, as young as five years old are welcome.
