The
Pigeon River in eastern Tennessee offers a scenic rafting
opportunity in Cherokee National Forest just north of Great Smoky
Mountains National Park. This river, which parallels Interstate 40
and is crossed by the Appalachian Trail, is easily accessible to
park visitors.
Although
the Pigeon River rafting trip is short, there is no lack of
whitewater action. Class III-IV Lost Guide and Double Reactionary
rapids are the largest of twelve Class Iii+ drops during the
Pigeon's course. This two hour trip provides an excellent
non-technical introduction to whitewater.
Rafting
trips are dependent on water releases from Carolina Power and
Light's Walter's power generation plant. The most consistent
whitewater is in April, May, and August.
