The Ocoee River, in eastern Tennessee, is one of the premier whitewater rivers in the southeast. It rivals North Carolina's Nantahala, West Virginia’s New and Pennsylvania's Lehigh and Youghiogheny as the most popular commercial rafting trip in eastern America.
The 4.5-mile (7-km) Ocoee raft trip features almost continuous whitewater during its 60-foot-per-mile drop between the Ocoee Diversion Dam (Dam 2) and its powerhouse. Many Class III-IV rapids—such as Entrance, Broken Nose, Double Trouble, Tablesaw, Diamond Splitter, and Hell Hole—feature big holes and large waves.
Rafting on the Ocoee has been possible only since 1976, when an old flume built in 1912-13 was condemned as unsafe and water was returned to the original channel. Today the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) to ensure continuous rapids and dependable water levels carefully regulates the Ocoee’s flow. Guaranteed water flows are now available Thursday through Monday during summer and on weekends during spring and fall.
U.S. Highway 64, which parallels much of the river, provides several excellent views of the Ocoee's impressive rapids.
