The Watauga River below
Wilber Dam is an excellent beginning-level raft trip. Its friendly
Class II+ whitewater is considered small enough for families with
very young children. Outfitters allow children as young as three
years old to enjoy the trip.
The
Watauga River's scenic course, featuring numerous waves and
continuous flow, is lined by limestone bluffs, old farms,
homesteads, and hardwood trees. Water releases from the Tennessee
Valley Authority's Watauga Lake and Dam east of Elizabethton are
normally sufficient for afternoon rafting throughout the season.
