Utah vacationers who want to experience a one- or two-day big-water raft trip in a beautiful southwest canyon will find there is none better than the middle Colorado's Westwater. The diversity of Westwater's breathtaking sandstone and granite canyon walls and the challenge of its exciting whitewater make it one of the Southwest's classic short river trips. . Eleven Class III-IV+ (Class V in high-water) rapids, including Funnel Falls, The Steps, Last Chance, and Skull in the narrow Black Granite Gorge, will excite both novice and experienced rafters.
Two-day trips, with overnight camping, are the most common Westwater excursion. However, the Bureau of Land Management does issue permits for a 17-mile (27-km) one-day trip to a limited number of outfitters. Westwater Canyon is located midway between Grand Junction, Colorado and Moab, Utah.
Three-day trips on the middle Colorado begin with the Horsethief and Ruby canyons downriver from Loma, Colorado. On this 25-mile (40-km) stretch, there is ample time to admire the river's spectacular sandstone canyon walls, explore its side canyons, or relax on its sandy beaches.
