In east-central Utah, less than 100 miles (160 km) downriver from Dinosaur National Monument, the Green River traverses two remote and beautiful wildernesses-Desolation and Gray canyons. These canyons, rich in ancient Indian art and abandoned homesteads, are vividly described in the journals of John Wesley Powell. Desolation Canyon is the only western river canyon to be listed as a Registered National Historical Landmark.
The Green River is one of the Southwest's best rivers for learning basic boating skills in rafts or inflatable kayaks. None of its more than sixty Class II-III rapids are technically difficult. The river's rapids gradually increase in difficulty from rolling waves to rapids, such as Three Fords, Steer Ridge, and Coal Creek.
The relaxed pace of the Green River itinerary, and its enchanting environment, has prompted a number of special excursions, which include professional instructional seminars, gourmet meals, and music concerts. Its relatively easy waters and sandy beaches have also made the Green a popular river stretch for disabled rafters.
