For nearly 300 miles (480
km) from Redford in west Texas through Big Bend National Park to
Langtry near the Amistad National Recreation Area, river rafting
provides the easiest way to experience the Rio Grande's scenic and
legendary canyons. Rafting in these southwest Texas sections of the
Rio Grande is not the result of snowmelt in the river's Colorado
high mountain origins, but rather from the waters of the equally
large watershed of the Rio Conchos tributary that drains the
Chihuahua State in northern Mexico.
While the isolation of Rio Grande's
spectacular Big Bend National Park canyons requires at least two or
more days for most river adventures, one of the river's most popular
trips is a one-day excursion near the western entrance to the Park.
Upstream from Lajitas, Colorado Canyon in the BB Ranch State Natural
Area has relatively easy Class I-II whitewater that is ideal for
families as well as other park visitors. Oar-guided raft trips leave
ample time to enjoy the vast beauty the canyon.
